Typhoid Mary was arrested for knowingly spreading a deadly disease. [View all]

Mary was a domestic, a cook. She went from job to job. Of the 8 families she cooked for, 7 had outbreaks of typhoid fever. In that year, 3,000 people in New York City suffered from an outbreak, and she was probably the cause. She was found directly responsible for 23 cases. She was tracked down by a contact tracer, and put into quarantine for two years.

After those two years, she was released with the promise not to go back to her job as a cook. She lied, started working as a cook again and knowingly infected at least 25 more people. Once the authorities tracked her down , she was placed into quarantine for the rest of her life to keep the rest of the community safe.

She infected a total of 58 people, three of whom died.

It's important to learn lessons from history...
