56. Getting clean energy is a dirty job

The world is going to need a HUGE amount of copper, aluminum, and iron ore if we want to cut down the production of greenhouse gases while ending hunger and poverty. Think of the wind turbines - they need copper and rare earth magnets for the generator. Solar needs copper to connect the cells and steel or aluminum structures to physically mount them on. Efficient batteries require lithium, and then there are the lines and towers to carry the power from where it is generated to where it is needed.

But there has to be better places to get them from than this, and better ways than strip mining to get it.
