(13,776 posts)I felt the same kind of "how can this be happening" during the Bush years, so I actually have some compassion for her. I don't suppose people who believe the ridiculous stories they hear deliberately seek out misinformation. They don't know that Fox News is allowed to lie; they presumably genuinely believe what they hear. So of course they're scared.
The difference between them and us, I would like to think, is that we are more fact-oriented, and we aren't inclined to unquestioningly accept the word of people who set themselves up as authorities. So I think we were right to be afraid, given the cavalier attitude Bush and Cheney had towards transparency, budgeting for wars, starting wars, etc. But I was genuinely afraid for the future of my kids and the country from 2000 to 2008, and it's no fun. I'm sorry she's too dim to change the channel and question her pastor, but by doing that she'd separate herself from her community, and that's a lot to ask of a person.
I blame the media personalities who feed on the fear of people like this.
