if you're a Republican. The Supreme Court, as originally constituted in 1789, had SIX justices. In 1801, a lame-duck session of Congress, led by John Adams, it was changed back to five. Then Jefferson changed it to seven, and in 1837 Andrew Jackson decided to make it 9. It can be changed at any time by a 2/3 vote of the House and Senate. Note that all increases have been made by Democrats. This probably increases the Repugnican animus and opposition. Too bad, so sad.
