Sure there was a time when Republicans generally were decent people but that ship sailed 40 - 50 years ago. And to be honest, I think you can go farther back than that.

The only way they can justify voting against candidates to want to heal the sick, clothe the naked, and feed the hungry is abortion and gay rights - both of which involves forcing their religion on other people ...
