such as people waiting on hill tops for the second coming, when things don't turn out the faithful usually just slip away quietly and then deny that they were ever followers to begin with.

It would be like looking for Nazis in post-war Germany. All those millions of faithful members of the Nazi party just mysteriously vanished into oblivion, and nobody would own up to ever having been a supporter.
