The votes are not combined. In winner take all whichever party has the most votes ends up getting the electors for that state. In theory in a close state if you split enough votes off the Democratic ticket the Democratic party could lose despite DEM + WFP being more than the Republican.
Also I don't see any reason to create confusion for the voters. "Vote blue/Democratic". It really is that simple.
