1. a 'gain of function' study isn't a study to engineer a virus to see how bad it can get. The terms 'gain of function' and 'loss of function' are genetics terms for forward and back mutations of genes. Those types of studies are done every day. And

2. There's no evidence the virus was modified artificially. It arose naturally. ( https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0820-9 )
