(5,625 posts)I have come to believe that COVID fatigue was a huge factor and the
"ignore-it-and-it-will-go-away" attitude was appealing.
For many, it was just wishful thinking and they wanted to believe that it is going away.
But for many, I think we have underestimated the economic realities of how badly it is hurting a lot of wrking class people. Even if they believe it is serious, they no longer have the luxury of staying home. Given the economic realities, they may have voted for the open-up path just so they didn't die in poverty even if there is a chance it could kill them. It is a sad state of affairs but there are a lot of people in this country who need to work even if it is at risk to their lives.
I have been trying to come to terms with my privilege on many subjects. And I recognize that my desire to close schools and restaurants is directly related to the fact that I don't rely on them for my livelihood. I might feel different about the entire pandemic if I did.
