Soros's "left-leaning" is pretty damn mild. He is, obviously, extremely pro-capitalism - he made his billions in the money markets. He supported movements for freedom of speech and political freedom in Warsaw Pact countries before the fall of the USSR - thus earning the lasting enmity of those who supported those regimes. Which includes Putin (though I don't know if Putin denounces him openly). Since then, his money has gone to those campaigning for equal rights and similar causes. More sympathetic to Democrats than Republicans, but not, I would have thought at first, enough to make him the devil-figure for rightists.

I find the American right's extreme hatred for him surprising; but I wonder if it was built up by Russian bots on the internet. It is based on all kinds of lies, repeated endlessly until the gullible take them as accepted facts.
