In reply to the discussion: Fuck John Elway [View all]KansDem
(28,498 posts)8. Remember Super Bowl 1987?
In 1987, Elway was selected to start in the American Football Conference's (AFC) Pro Bowl team and won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award. He went on to once again lead the Broncos to a victory over the Browns in the AFC title game, earning their second consecutive Super Bowl appearance, this one against the Washington Redskins. The game started out very well for Denver, and they built up a 100 lead by the end of the first quarter. At the time, no team had ever overcome a 100 deficit in the Super Bowl. But in the second quarter, the Redskins suddenly stormed back with a record 35 points, and ended up winning Super Bowl XXII 4210.

I remember how the media went all oogly-googly over Elway, especially the sports commentators. All we heard was running up to the game was "Elway! Elway! Elway!"
But guess what? Elway lost! And he was defeated by a team with *gasp* a black quarterback!

Doug Williams was the first African-American quarterback ever to start in a NFL league championship game, let alone a Super Bowl

I think that was the "winning kick", not the "tying kick" at the end of "the drive"

I hope you're right, because I'm a huge Pats fan, but..the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
