Twenty two years ago, there were over 5200 registered Democrats and only 359 registered Republicans in Ballard Co. Even then, however, the number of votes cast for Clinton was half the total number of registered Democrats and the number of votes for Bush was three times the number of registered republicans. Over time those numbers have shifted, with the number of registered republicans increasing and the number of of registered Democrats declining. But the changes were relatively incremental, primarily as first time registrants picked the republican party while voters who were already registered didn't bother to re-register just to change their party affiliation.
