conservatives. And not overwhelming numbers of the latter, if those currently still exist anywhere. The GOP has done its best to quash moderation and progressivism on the right.

Jefferson's and Madison's liberal Republican-Democratic Party was destroyed by an influx of conservatives who took it over. They then destroyed what they named the Democratic Party, supporting the slavery side of the Civil War, and nearly century later liberals took it back, its remnant hard-core southern conservatives becoming a rabid little opposition faction.

That happened when the dominant opposition-conservative party of that era crashed. It could happen again at the district and state levels, and is something to look out for.
