He implied that the President was a liar. Reagan was an actor and knew how to deliver a line and for some reason that four word sentence resonated mightily with the people.

Never mind that the statement Carter had just delivered was correct and important, never mind that Reagan offered no real substantive counter argument. He was able to dismiss Carter entirely and look good doing it. People didn't like Jimmy's harsh truths and preferred Reagan's sunny racist bullshit.

Your description gave me a good laugh though.
