(1,262 posts)Losing the two Georgia Senate seats would definitely do some damage, but I don't think it will be the end of the GOP.
One factor that would diminish (but not end) the GOP as we know it is demographics. The GOP has become essentially a white nationalist party. It's projected that white people will be less than 50% of the US population by 2050. But in certain states, the white population will still be in the majority. For example, I don't see a huge increase in the non-white population of Wyoming coming anytime soon. So, in certain states, the GOP will maintain it's domination for a long time.
Georgia has become a bellwether state. Georgia is the 8th most populous state with a significant black population. Atlanta is the 8th largest metropolitan statistical area in terms of population. Georgia may turn blue permanently.
If the Trump wing of the party goes too far to the right, we might see more people who identify with the Republican party finally get disgusted and leave, but that remains to be seen.
A three party system is probably not going to happen anytime soon. Why not? Dark money. Also, third parties like the Green Party and the Libertarian Party currently do not have enough people interested in them to make a difference in most political races.
