But white-tie-and-tails and a tuxedo are two different things. Take it from a die-hard clothes horse.

As hard as it may be to believe now, a tuxedo was once considered almost shockingly casual. It was the forerunner of what later came to be know as 'lounge suits', suits with a short jacket rather than a long skirt like the frock-coat, or the swallowtail like the cutaway tailcoat.

White tie, worn now only for the most formal of occasions, was pretty common wear among the wealthy for dinner out, dinner in, the opera, gatherings of the social elite, and so on.

The tuxedo was a move away from such stiff formal wear in the fading days of the Victorian Era.

Nowadays, when most people can't be bothered to wear anything more formal than sweats and a ball cap almost anywhere, the tuxedo seems almost ludicrously formal.

I once thought no one could look bad in white-tie-and tails. Trump proved me horribly wrong...

On edit: A good example of the way the tuxedo was once looked down upon appears in an episode of "Downton Abbey". The male members of the Crowley family wear white tie to dinner every night. One night, they're entertaining a guest who doesn't possess white tie, so he wears a black tie evening suit to dinner. The Crowleys are genteely scandalized.
