(22,975 posts)probably existed, and the stories that have arrived here in the 21st century are most likely an amalgam of typical stories of men just like him.
The difference being, post death, someone was able to sell the whole thing as one story. At the time, paganism was so unsustainable, one guy with 10 rules and his own sacrifice, and eternal heaven after just one dowsing in the water was a deal no one would pass up.
It's impossible for us modern people to ever appreciate what a better deal that was compared to endless irrational gods and personal sacrifices, without the comforts of modern science.
The societal conditions that were ripe for a "one god" paradigm are long extinct. Now, we don't even need one god, we've got mobile phones and the interwebs and fast food. Problems solved.
