Miz t. vs the Church Ladies [View all]
Background:
Miz t. attended a Friday-Saturday retreat for Episcopal Church Women.
It was at a pleasant camp on a secluded bay here in coastal Alabama.
Miz t. is president of her parish's ECW organization.
Although we 'agreed to disagree' on religion and deities decades ago, she seems to get a lot of comfort and spiritual peace from her church doings.
I don't begrudge her that at all.
The Event:
The ladies were having a glass of wine prior to dinner and 'visiting'.
Miz t. walked up to a porch where some of the older women were sitting.
They were from another parish and she didn't know them. Appeared to be in their late 70s/early 80s.
As she sat down she heard "Obama just lies all the time." "I don't think that's his real father." "I don't know what I'll do if he gets another four years." "He's just taking this country down the tubes."
Miz t. votes the Democratic ticket and is a big fan of Obama's.
She said "Excuse me ladies, but I support President Obama. Do we really want to discuss politics in this setting?"
And one blue-hair said "Oh honey! I'll PRAY for you!"
And Miz t. was off to the races, ears laid back and breathing fire.
PRAY for me? PRAY for me because I support a particular candidate? Do you think God gives two hoots who wins this election? If God cares at all, he wants the best man to win. And that's clearly Barack Obama. Last time I checked this was pretty much a free country and we citizens are free to support any political party that we choose to. If you need something to pray for, pray for kids who go to bed hungry. Pray for parents trying to earn enough to house and feed those kids. Pray for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. I appreciate your offer to pray for me, but please don't pray for me to change my mind about my political choice."
And then it got very quiet on the porch.
And politics never came up again at the retreat.
Damn I love this woman.
