Troy officials support police chief who attended Washington rally
Officials say Chief Dave Ellis did not take part in rioting

Dick Thackston, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, said town officials are confident that Chief Dave Ellis took no part in the riots Wednesday.

Thackston said Ellis was using his own time to make the trip, wasn't in uniform and was not representing the town. Some posts on the town's Facebook page are calling for Ellis to resign or be fired.

Ellis is quarantining following his trip out of New England, and Thackston said those provisions were made ahead of time, and he's using personal time to quarantine.

"Dave knew he was going to be going there and coming back and needed to be in quarantine," Thackston said. "There's no break in service or coverage, and it's not a compensation or an additional expense to the town."

Thackston said that as far as he can tell, the posts calling for Ellis to step down are coming from people who don't live in Troy, and he believes the chief has the overwhelming support of residents.
