2. if the senate were to convict, there's a second senate vote to bar him from future federal office.

i can't see 17 republicans agreeing to convict, but *if* they agreed to that, i can't imagine why they wouldn't vote to bar him from future federal office; in fact, that might be the *only* reason they would agree to vote to convict in the first place -- to prevent future retaliation from a re-elected donnie.
