It wasn't that religious leaders bought into the idea of Trump, but rather, they sold it. And they sold it in such a way that people who didn't follow them were godless heathens who are on a one way ticket to hell if they didn't support who the church voted for 110%. It's that "you're with us or against us" attitude from the Bush era multiplied by 1000%.
The church is run by greedy assholes who are out for that sweet sweet tax free money and totalitarian, authoritarian power. They'll peddle any loser to their masses as long as they say and give them what they want. It doesn't take a philosophy or political science major to figure that out.
