(3,495 posts)Slavery was existent in several states that bordered with the Union. Remember, the institution of slavery was generally attached to agricultural based businesses. The southern part of DE and the eastern shore of Maryland were slave holding. Lots of agriculture and plantation settings there.
Lincoln had to be snuck through Baltimore for his inauguration. The city had slave-holding sympathies. Lee and his army were under the impression when they invaded MD before Antietam that they would be welcomed with open arms. The western part of MD as well as VA were union supporting areas of their respective states (the NW part of VA succeeded from VA and became WV). I believe there were some MD units that fought for the Confederacy.
Slavery in the Border States wouldn't be abolished until after the Civil War was either over or nearly over.
