In reply to the discussion: Mitch McConnell Is Planning All-Out War To Purge Trump From The Republican Party [View all]wnylib
(25,557 posts)Republicans are splitting over Trump and the extreme right versus more traditional conservatives and right leaning Independents.
With Trump out of office, McConnell expects to be next in line as party leader. He wants the personal power and also to pay back Trump for costing him the majority leadership through the Georgia runoffs.
But the people opposing the Trumpists see Mitch as Trump's enabler and defender for years. Romney has a better chance of leading the anti Trump faction than McConnell has.
Meantime, as you say, some Trump followers are turning on him over his words in the coup aftermath. They feel betrayed and see Trump as weak and powerless. But there are still avid Trump supporters in Congress. There are still extreme RWers willing to follow Trump or whoever tries to take his place as the leading American fascist.
