(2,851 posts)This is not a post-racial country and it won't ever be at the rate we're going now. The average working class white person has an aversion to minorities of any stripe. Obama's single greatest impediment with the very voters that would benefit from his policies the most is the simple fact this his skin isn't white. It doesn't matter that his mother was caucasian, he's not white enough for a lot of these voters and they'll look for an alternative because they're not comfortable with people who don't look like their reflection in the mirror telling them what to do or how to think, and they just don't trust them.
All voters were hearing prior to that debate was that Romney was a walking, talking bumbling disaster. He came out onto that debate stage and performed. He looked, to low information voters and racist whitebread voters, "presidential" - and that's enough for them. It doesn't matter that he'll strip away every social safety net they and their parents and their grandparents have - and will never have again - he's white enough for them and that's all that matters. He could tell them to their faces that he's going to impose a higher tax on them and take away every mortage and dependent deduction they've evern taken - and that under his plans they'll probably have to get three or four part-time, low wage, no benefit jobs to put a pot of beans on their dining tables - and they'd still vote for the guy. Romney could tell these folks that the wimen folk need to stay at home, sweep the porch, "surrender" to their husbands and birth as many children as they can drop out of their bodies until the day they died in childbirth or from a pistol stuck in the mouths, and they'd still vote for the sorry bastard.
