(1,569 posts)This is NOT a post racial country, but that isn't the significant factor in this election. It is a factor, sure. So is Romney's religion. So is the first debate. But before you tar the entire country with "the average working class white person has an aversion to minorities" thing, realize that better than 50% (or if you subscribe to fraud theories, nearly 50%) voted for Bush II over Kerry. Geez, Obama won soundly in his first term and he was just as black then.
This country is polarized by a number of things..."values", economic ideology, simple red vs blue state games, and yes, racism. Focusing solely on the racial issue ignores the reality that there are other real issues of importance dividing the candidates. Certainly, call people on overt racism, but blanket statements that all white working folk are racist are not only wrong when examined, they are harmful in that they shut down all discussion.
It is quite possible to be totally wrong (i.e., republican) without being racist.
