Eugene Pitts that made this comparison of how the elite conservatives in Germany thought they could make a deal with Hitler and control him.

I had read enough of how Hitler came to power to agree with Mr. Pitts. But, when I tried to warn people, I got accused of alarmism and hyperbole at best. Most people snickered at such a "dumb" comparison because Trump had not sent people to death camps in 2016. But Hitler had not done that - yet - in his campaigns to power, either.

The problem was that the horrors that developed under Nazi rule overshadowed HOW they got into power, so very few Americans were prepared to recognize early warning signs.
