1. I believe there's a law that actually requires corporations to give priority to their profits.

It's something called a "fiduciary duty". I've noticed that some corporations contribute to charitable causes, but they always boast loudly about it as a way of advertising their brand. Supporting democracy probably doesn't enhance profits enough to attract corporations.
