In reply to the discussion: Please help me understand: why shouldn't online sites be held accountable [View all]DonaldsRump
(7,715 posts)69. True, but you could say that about many small businesses, online or not?
Online companies, big and small, have learned to deal with data privacy regulations around the world and in the US (e.g., GDPR in the EU, California, etc). Why can't there be something similar for the accuracy of information?
Algorithms coupled with human intervention, a notice of a proposed offense, and a time to cure (e.g.., by taking down the offensive post that contains a defamatory lie) before imposing civil liability could easily work. Of course, you would need a regulator with that power. It already exists for consumer protection at both the federal and state levels. It could work for defamatory issues as well.
