(31,261 posts)Americans have lived most of the last century above the living standard of all the rest of the world in terms of jobs. The country is moving down toward the industrialized world mean. It is tougher for everyone to get the great jobs of yesterday, there are simply fewer of them due to other nations catching up with us, and due to robotics and Artificial Intelligence.
I love to tell the following two stories, because I believe they illustrate how the world has changed because of automation and AI. When I was in my early twenties, banks used to have something like 7-10 tellers and several loan officers. Today, youre keen if you see 3 tellers in a bank. Transferring money used to be a chore, it always involved a person or two handling the transaction, today a person can transfer thousands of dollars literally in the middle of the night, which is convenient for the person or company doing the transfer and the person or company on the other end, but automation killed off several jobs.
