Pile a bunch of soil around the graft. If the graft still holds, then the tree will resprout. If the graft dies, then the tree will sprout from Sour Orange rootstock, which looks like an orange, but tastes awful


You don't need to pre-treat with fungicide or insecticide if doing this for short term:

There is a large avocado tree in my neighborhood. It is about 20 feet tall and casts great shade. It's gonna be a goner.
