My cat is independent finicky and couldn't be bothered with us at times. Meanwhile my dog lays at one of our feet all day every day unless we are playing or walking him or gone a few hours to shop. Weather permitting he goes with us in car. He sleeps by our bedside while cat wants to be up on her perch bed.

I would never leave my dog for more than 4 hours and if it was freezing he would be with us or go to a sitters. I leave the heat and air conditioning on for my pets even if gone a few hours.

Obviously their dog is NOT a part of the family.
