(9,002 posts)...but he's a liberal and far more Democratic than Republican. Maybe he was more Libertarian than Democratic in the past, but I don't believe that is currently the best characterization.
Semantics are important, but really aren't relevant to the OP's criticism. I defend Maher all the time on DU, and frankly it's like shooting fish in a barrel. The criticisms are always very vague and amount to little more than "I just don't like the guy".
The left has always done a great job with constructive criticism of their own. When guys like Al Franken were falling on their swords, asshats like Roy Moore remained brazenly defiant. It is a weakness and it is a strength. Maher is one of those critics and one of the first to embrace the term "cancel culture".
Unfortunately, the right will pick up on this and then pile on. So this makes those criticisms from within sound like right-wing talking points. But they aren't.
Just being honest.
