In reply to the discussion: Bill Maher. Anyone else think he's changed or wondering if it's us??? [View all]meadowlander
(5,086 posts)He's a contrarian who likes to bait people into arguing on TV for a living.
The last episode I watched was the one with Steve Schmidt where Maher was determined to get him arguing with Markos Moulitsas from Daily Kos. Even Schmidt kept saying "yes we obviously disagree about some things, but there's a lot more important shit going on in the country right now" and Bill kept baiting him until he would talk about something that liberals would disagree with.
I think Bill is sometimes funny but he can't keep his eye consistently on the big picture because he keeps getting distracted banging the drum about his perpetual gripes with "cancel culture" and religion, etc. and trying to manufacture a grudge match for ratings.
He tries to walk the middle road between a comedy show and serious political commentary and it just doesn't work. You end up with pretentious, vacuous, mean-spirited shit-stirring that just isn't that funny most of the time.
This flew pre-Jon Stewart's the Daily Show because we didn't have anything better but now it's just a bit dated and sad compared with shows like Last Week Tonight and Colbert and Sam Bee. I only watch it because there's absolutely nothing else on worth watching the two days a week Rachel Maddow is off.
