(1,690 posts)In fifth grade my teacher said that one of the differences in America was that in general, people paid their taxes and obeyed the law.
It's not the last 4 years, it's the last 40.
Systemic corruption of the tax system, failed enforcement on wealthy scofflaws, special loopholes and exceptions for the wealthy, it's no wonder people are upset with the system. They're forgetting it was not always thus in the US.
Simple traffic laws systematically ignored. We (US citizens) used to make fun of the fact that other countries (specifically Italy) didn't follow the traffic codes and ignored those. Now, I'll gladly compare the typical SUV or luxury car driver to Italians. I don't think we'll come out any better.
We're still carrying around this image of ourselves the the 1940's as saviors of the world, but we haven't been those people for decades.
