Yes Maddoff died in prison, and absolutely, no one is above the law, but the fact that Maddoff remains in the memory as "one of the ones who got caught". This is a guy who was in the business since the 1960's and hailed as "the wizard of Wall Street". He commited fraud for years and basically got caught because he was stealing from rich people. There are SO many people who stole life savings from average people who never received justice.
