That's why the Apollo program was discontinued in 1972. The prestige-competition having been won, and the Moon proving on close inspection to be economically useless, the only remaining reason to go there was scientific exploration. Not a sufficiently compelling reason for Congress to continue the funding.

I hate to get all "where's my jetpack," but, dammit, there were supposed to be CITIES on the Moon by now!
