Many allow themselves to be conned because, even though they know they are being taken for a ride, it's still a whole lot less terrifying than actually facing reality.
Others allow themselves to be conned because they are uncomfortable admitting that a black president could be better qualified than a guy who "makes Wonderbread look dark and mysterious."
I think that very few are being conned and don't realize that they are being conned.
