Texas alcohol-to-go bill signed into law by Gov. Abbott

Texans are now permanently able to buy alcohol to go from restaurants under a law enacted Wednesday by Gov. Greg Abbott.

The measure allows beer, wine and cocktails to be included in pickup and delivery food orders. Restaurants began using the concept early in the pandemic to prop up drooping revenue, and it has gained rare bipartisan support among legislators this session.

“This new law will help businesses keep their doors open and ensure Texans keep their jobs,” Bentley Nettles, who heads the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, said in a statement.

Texas is one of among nearly a dozen states that have legalized to-go alcohol sales during the pandemic. The state has been traditionally stringent on alcohol transactions, prohibiting purchases on Sunday mornings and imposing limits on distillery sales.
