[Religious right ray cray] on SCOTUS takes up Mississippi abortion case that could limit Roe v. Wade [View all]

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to take up a key abortion case next term concerning a controversial Mississippi law that banned most abortions after 15 weeks, rekindling a potentially major challenge to Roe v. Wade at the majority conservative court. Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban, which then-Gov. Phil Bryant, a Republican, signed into law in 2018, made exceptions only for medical emergencies or cases in which there is a "severe fetal abnormality," but not for instances of rape or incest. A federal judge in Mississippi struck down the law in November 2018, and the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that ruling in December 2019.

TRMS covered this last night. The analysis was spot on. Why have SCOTUS agreed to hear a case on settled law, when there have been no conflicting decisions in lower courts - where the law has been struck down over and over - why do they want to hear this case? *soph strokes chin* Oh wait. I forgot. With all the shit going on with the neo GOP, the insurrection and the new Jim Crow voting laws, the fact that the far right religious cray cray in local GOP parties and on the highest court in the land, have wet dreams about introducing a theocratic dominium with the bible as the founding documents and the constitution going back the good old days of being all about male, pale, stale landowners cause *shrugs* to women and their rights has not has the focus it deserves. If this stands the landscape for women across republican run states is perilous in the extreme. First this, what next? Contraception? Punishment for sex not in a marital context? Prison sentences if you travel across state lines for reproductive justice - I can pretty much guarantee that will be a real thing because the men who want to control women's choices also delight in punishing women who refuse to comply with their violent patriarchal, misogynistic, sexist man is the head of the house who needs to be obeyed bollocks. I am not being hyperbolic.
