I don't think he has any altruistic motives or is secretly helping the Democrats. He is probably more like conservatives in Italy and Germany who allied with the fascists because while they knew they were bad, they though the left was far worse. They also thought they could control the ultra right wing elements. I think that's where McConnell is at. The analogy is a bit hyperbolic since I don't think we are a few years away from being full-blown Nazi Germany, I do think McConnell is too out of touch and naive to realize allying with the far Right is extremely dangerous.
