What the GOP is now, its always been there but either purposefully or perhaps some perverse instinct perhaps, it grew slowly so most folks didn't notice. Trump didn't cause it. He might have kicked it up a few notches, empowered it but it was always there. I think one of the reason he went with GOP after playing at being a democrat for awhile. He sensed kindred spirits like his affinity for dictators. Even better he saw with his admitted con man talents he could manipulate them.
