It takes a support system (friends, family, a belief system) who ground you but also cheer you on to perhaps find one's way over, around, and through the obstacles the Morlocks constantly try to erect in your path so you give up. I lucked out with a naturally optimistic/phlegmatic temperament, but by far the most important is the support system.
