twenty years ago, we were often surprised at how many older Asian people wore masks when they were in public, a habit they seem to have possibly brought from their home country. At the time, I thought it was more pollution related, which it likely could have been. It seemed odd to us back then, but now it is starting to make sense.

Yes. Maybe wearing masks will have some beneficial unanticipated consequences

World wide rate of infection was established. Once that was made mask were promoted

One would think masks needed to be promoted before infections spread far and wide.
