My friends dad landed on Normandy beach the day after d-day. I really cant imagine the carnage he saw. His job, after burying the dead was an engineer dealing with bridges. Watching that movie after finding out his history, made me cry.

I think Spielberg came pretty close to depicting it in "Saving Private Ryan"... the carnage...

I think it was a response to the Vietnam War movies to remind viewers that WW2 was just as horrific.
