They literally don't care about the consequences of their words and (in)actions to other people. They only care about themselves, and even then only very short term timelines.

Why? How can this be so? It seems so illogical.

Because modern Repuke politics, rhetoric, propaganda, cable news, talk radio, social media creates a tremendous selection pressure. Anyone with concern for others, or concern for long term consequences, gets winnowed out. Fast. They aren't in office anymore. In Repuke politics, having morals or empathy or intellectual integrity are characteristics of unfitness. One's career is cut short by that, or never even begins. This is what the GQP has evolved into. Repukes in office are the most depraved politicians one can find because if they were any less depraved they would have lost that last primary to someone who was moreso, and their policies or lack thereof reflect that.
