17. Cormac McCarthy's "The Road"

Yeah, I'm not very optimistic. I don't think it was ever stated what the global disaster actually was in that book but I'm betting on climate change. I wrote a kind-of hopeful dystopian story a while back, in which rising temperatures activated some previously dormant super-growth genes in kudzu and the vines spread like crazy, covering everything, shutting down carbon emitters, and cooling the planet. That may be the best we can hope for.
