No matter how things went in Afghanistan, the President would have taken a lot of criticism, because it was going to be unpredictable and messy. Biden has been around a long time and he knew that and I'm sure realized he would take a hit for his decision regardless of the consequences.
Presidents make the truly hard decisions, ones where there often are no good outcomes, just less bad ones and they have to consider the long range effects of those decisions. I cannot imagine what it must be like to make such decisions and have to live with the aftermath and barrage of criticisms.
So yes, I think the hit to his popularity will be short lived. The American people as a rule have a very short attention span.
