If they have cats, they may be running around to get used to the apartment.

I once had this sound and told my very friendly upstairs neighbor about the bowling ball sound - which was happening while he was at work. He said it had to be the cat. Once I knew what it was, it was less annoying.

I've had this problem before... once I even knocked on the upstairs neighbor's door at midnight (she had just come home) and asked her to take off her shoes. There were no rugs, so when she walked around in shoes it felt like she was walking on my head.
