In reply to the discussion: Should Chris Wray be asked to step down? [View all]Ocelot II
(130,581 posts)6. Biden and his staff know more about him than we do.
FBI directors serve ten-year terms and report directly to the Attorney General. While Biden does have the authority to fire Wray for cause, he is not likely to do so in the absence of clear misfeasance. It's extremely rare for a president to fire his FBI director due to the appearance of impropriety and the necessity of maintaining a distance between the White House and the FBI. It has happened only twice: Clinton fired William Sessions on account of multiple ethics violations, and Trump fired Comey basically because Comey wouldn't swear allegiance to him. I don't think Biden wants to go down the same path in the absence of clear evidence that Wray has violated the law in some way.

Doing so in the wake of this dubious reporting would only legitimize politicization of the position.

He should certainly have it made clear to him that his resignation would be favorably received

Somehow, I just don't see Biden calling for the Capitol to be seized or an election to be overturned
