Probably what kept her from suicide, IMO. Is she supposed to NOT find a way to get a laugh out of all of this? I'm a little bit older than her, I made similar mistakes in my youth (though NOT, thank god, in the international public eye) and yes, I do find some element of bitter humor in them now.
Her ability to laugh about it now is telling people that the worst mistake of your life does NOT necessarily mean you have to wear sackcloth and ashes forever, even in circumstances as incredibly humiliating as hers.
